William J. Mallon, M.D. 

Born and raised in Flint, Michigan. He received his Bachelor of Science in physiology from Michigan State University and his Medical Degree from Wayne State University where he graduated a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

After a one-year internship at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Dr. Mallon completed a three-year ophthalmology residency at the University of Tennessee. He then completed a one-year fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery with Ophthalmic Plastic Surgical Associates of Memphis.

Adam M. Katz M.D.

Board certified by the prestigious American Board of Ophthalmology. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Union College in New York, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, he was awarded his medical degree from Albany Medical College, NY. Dr. Katz completed his internship in internal medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. After completing a three-year residency in ophthalmology at Saint Vincent’s Hospital, Manhattan, he went on to complete a one-year medical retina fellowship at NYU and a second two-year retina fellowship in Memphis with world-renowned retinal surgeon Steve Charles, MD. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Florida State University and was recently elected as President of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology.  Dr. Katz has more than 20 years of clinical experience treating patients with retinal and vitreous disorders.

Alexander D. Blanford, M.D.

Board-certified ophthalmologist with a focus in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Blandford completed a 2-year fellowship approved by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASOPRS) at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute. While a fellow at the Cleveland Clinic he was awarded the Outstanding Clinical Fellow Award and the Knights Templar Research Award by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Blandford completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Florida where he served as Chief Resident and was elected the Resident of the Year. Originally from Lexington, KY, Dr. Blandford attended medical school at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received the Clinical Translational Science Research Grant.

Dr. Blandford has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers and has served as a reviewer for Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.  He has also lectured locally, nationally, and internationally on oculofacial plastic surgery.

Dr. Blandford’s clinical interests include cosmetic and reconstructive surgery around the eyes and face. This includes upper eyelid surgery (eyelid lift and blepharoplasty), lower eyelid surgery (cosmetic removal of bags under eyes and reconstructive), brow/forehead lifts, cheek lifts, cancer removal and reconstruction, tear drainage system surgery, orbital surgery, and non-surgical treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers, and skin treatments.

J. Michael Schnell, M.D.

Received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore, during which time he was awarded a fellowship in radiation therapy. For his post-graduate work, Dr. Schnell completed an internship and, subsequently, a residency in ophthalmology, both at the University of Maryland Hospital. He went on to become Chief Resident before opening his private practice in St. Albans, Vermont.

Dr. Schnell is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Ophthalmology. He was affiliated with Northwestern Medical Center. At that hospital, he served as chairman of the department of surgery, president of the medical staff, and president of the board of directors. Dr. Schnell has worked with the Vermont State Medical Society, moving up to occupy the position of president, and he was the founding member and president of the Vermont Rural Health Consortium. He also has acted as chairman on the executive committee of the Vermont Health Care Review and a member of the Board of Directors for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont.

Dr. Schnell’s community activities include acting as Board and Campaign Chairman for the United Way, participating on the Board of Directors for both the Bellows Free Academy and the Collins-Perley Athletic Center, as well as being a member of the Northwestern Medical Center Golf Committee.

Edward S. Branigan III, M.D.

Board certified by the prestigious American Board of Ophthalmology.  He received his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University, and then graduated from Downstate Medical Center.  Following an internal medicine internship at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Branigan served as a flight surgeon at Patrick Air Force Base.  He then completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Branigan has been practicing ophthalmology in Vero Beach for more than 30 years.  His stellar reputation in the community speaks for itself.

Dominick A. Benedetto, M.D.

Board Certified Ophthalmologist and Surgeon who has been in private practice in Morristown and Bayonne New Jersey for the past 38 years. He recently moved to Vero Beach in June 2018 and is now practicing general ophthalmology as a member of the medical staff of The Center for Advanced Eye Care.

Dr. Benedetto received his BS from Rutgers University in New Jersey, his MS in Immunology and Medical Microbiology and his MD from The University of Florida College of Medicine. He served as an intern in internal medicine at The Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC and as a resident surgeon at the renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. He remained on the staff at the Wills Eye Hospital as an Associate Attending Surgeon on the Cataract and Primary Eye Care Service for 12 years following his residency.

Dr. Benedetto is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

His research fellowships include a training grant from the National Institutes of Health, a student research fellowship from The University of Florida College of Medicine and The Delaware Valley Eye Bank.

He has published research in peer-reviewed journals and medical textbooks and has been a guest speaker at national and international symposia in the areas of surface chemistry and biomaterials used in ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery.

Derek H. Ohlstein, M.D.

Derek Ohlstein, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist with a focus on cataract surgery and glaucoma treatment. Dr. Ohlstein is a native of New Orleans and graduated from Tulane University Medical School. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Florida. Dr. Ohlstein has published several peer-reviewed articles including Case Reports in Ophthalmology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. He has also lectured extensively on ocular surface disease and developments in minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries.

Dr. Ohlstein’s clinical interests include glaucoma, cataracts, and dry eye. This includes helping glaucoma patients to decrease their need for daily drops with minimally invasive clinic lasers and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Ohlstein’s goal with cataract surgery is to ensure that his patients see clearer, drive safer, and are less dependent on glasses. He also enjoys helping dry eye patients treat the underlying cause of their condition and find relief from their symptoms.

Dr. Ohlstein was inspired to pursue medicine by his grandfather who was a practitioner in North Florida. Prior to his career in ophthalmology, he worked as a professional photographer and in the development of new medications. Dr. Ohlstein lives in Palm City and enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 children. They are often found outside gardening together. He also enjoys fishing, photography, golf, and cooking.

Val Zudans, M.D.

Dr. Zudans has served on the Medical Advisory Board for MACS (Most Accurate Cataract Surgery), a national coalition of medical professionals dedicated to defining best practice benchmarks in cataract surgery. He was a lead investigator for Softec HD intraocular lens studies and the first to introduce No-Drop Cataract Surgery to our area.

Dr. Zudans completed his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, consistently ranked the number one ophthalmology program in the country for over 15 years by US News and World Report. Before his residency, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida where he was an Anderson scholar and elected Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Doctorate of Medicine degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine and was elected to the national medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha representing the top 10% of his class.

Dr. Zudans is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His study for MACS related to HD lens implants was published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the preeminent peer-reviewed journal for cataract surgeons.   He is a local speaker and maintains active memberships in the Florida Society of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Florida Medical Association, and Indian River County Medical Society.

Committed to local issues, Dr. Zudans was elected to the Vero Beach City Council in 2017 and Mayor in 2019. He is a member of Sunrise Rotary and attends Calvary Chapel of Vero Beach.  He is past President of the Indian River County Medical Society and served on the Indian River County Hospital District Board of Trustees. Dr. Zudans, his wife Tracey, and their four children love the Florida lifestyle and have resided in Vero Beach since 2002.
