About Our Practice

We built the practice we wanted our own families to use.

Since 2003, the Center for Advanced Eye Care has grown from a single ophthalmologist into the largest eye practice on the Treasure Coast — eight ophthalmologists, two optometrists, two offices, and our own accredited surgery center.

The reason was simple. Patients here were driving to Orlando, Miami, or Melbourne for subspecialty care that should have been available at home. So we brought the subspecialties here instead: cornea, glaucoma, retina, and oculofacial plastic surgery, each led by a fellowship-trained surgeon. We remain the only practice in Indian River County with full-time fellowship-trained oculofacial surgeons. Cataract surgery is what we are best known for. We perform it with topical anesthesia — no needle, no patch, no IV sedation — and most patients are back to their normal routine the same day. Some go to lunch afterward. Some go back to work. And we removed the errands, too. Our on-site optical fits your glasses. Our on-site dispensary fills your prescriptions and stocks the over-the-counter products we recommend. Our surgery center is in our building. You are not sent across town to finish what you started here. Twenty-three years in, we still measure ourselves the same way — by whether the person in the chair would send us their mother.

Dr. Katz is thorough and amazing. I started seeing him when I started going to Advanced Eye Care in Vero Beach in Feb 2012. It was the only facility in Indian River County or St. Lucie County with the equipment to do a specialty eye test I needed. In 2021, Dr. Mallon removed cataracts on me. My husband and I both have been patients there since 2012. Always had a positive experience! We can't imagine going anywhere else for our eye care. P.S. If you get an eye emergency, call their number instead of going to ER or urgent care, even if you are not a patient there. An eye doctor is on call 24/7. Urgent Care or ER does not specialize in eyes, but these doctors do.

I would like to commend Dr. Vander Woude for his kindness,professionalism and commitment to his profession. It is unheard of in our days for a doctor to accommodate a patient on a Sunday when the office is closed to come in and diagnose his condition and treat him with the upmost respect. I had gone to the emergency room with only vision in my left eye I couldn’t see anything out of my right eye at all and the hospital had no optometrist anywhere on duty. I woke up this morning with a bloody looking eye and no idea why this was happening. I called Dr Mallons’ office and got an appt with Dr Ohlstein in about 25 minutes. He looked at me after tech Zabby tested my sight and pressure and knew exactly what it was. He pulled an eye lash away from my eye and said I had a type of a hemorrhage that would gradually go away on its own within 1-2 weeks. Dr O was very cheerful and upbeat and since he was filling in for a Dr Mallon patient he was happy to help me he said. He reassured me and didn’t rush through his diagnosis. I noticed the report said I appeared well nourished. I got a kick out of that. Yes, I recommend this Eye doctor and the facility as a whole.

Cataract surgery without sedation or anesthesia is no more difficult than going to the dentist, and is probably easier. Dr. Mallon has perfected the procedure and the office is run efficiently and professionally, without losing the human touch.
